Iodized Salt can cause stomach problems and pancreatitis. This also causes bloating, filling the stomach with gas and twist leading to death. Pre-made foods often contain salt.

Tomatoes and Tomato Plants contain atropine causing dilated pupils, tremors and an irregular heartbeat.

Healthy Food For your Dog

So, you think you know all about your dogs nutrition?

There are many dog owners who think they’re doing whats best for them when it comes to feeding time.  With  your canine companion it shouldn’t be a guessing game. Feeding your pet only what they want and not knowing what their body needs may not be keeping them healthy.

Their diet can be as complicated as yours and its important that you know what their nutritional needs are. Without specific vitamins and nutrients your pet can have brittle bones, dry skin, disease, upset stomachs, weight issues and some cases, death. Having a balanced diet is an important building block to keeping them healthy and if he doesn’t get the right nutrients their health is at risk.

Food specifically designed for your pet contains all the nutritional requirements a healthy dog needs.

The decision between dry or moist food can make a difference, as well as, checking the ingredients and nutritional value. When choosing their food keep in mind what their needs actually are and move beyond the meat it contains. The meat it contains provides many of the needed nutrients, but they also need fiber and carbohydrates that aid with their digestion. Giving him a bowl of dry food all the time and sometimes a treat is not alway a good thing either. You can mix up the ingredients and textures to make it a different meal too.

You don’t eat the same meal all the time, don’t you think you should do the same for your pet?

How To Communicate To Your Dog

How To Communicate To Your Dog

Many dog owners have concerns and complaints they get frustrated over. Weather it be an aggression issue or their dog simply does not listen.

With this situation it starts with communication from their owners.

If your dog is simply not doing what you want, chances are you unknowingly communicated that his behavior works. Dogs will think it’s okay that they can do it and you agree. Instead you have taught them to do something else.  Most people think communicating with their dog is just speaking. With dogs its mostly with body language.

Dogs know people speak a lot and most of the time its not even to them. When you are speaking to them its often confusing.  You change your words different ways and you speak in sentences. They understand some things you say and there are times they respond and do what you want. In reality that doesn’t mean they understand at all. When your dog barks and you tell them to be quiet. Is it because you distracted them temporarily or is it the tone of your voice? It doesn’t mean that your dog understands and they may not know what the word means.

If you want to teach your dog how to understand what you are saying, reward them with a treat when they are quiet. To be effective, talk to your dog less and focus on actions. Its not what you say, but your actions are communication to your dog. If your dog is growling at someone and you let them continue this behavior, you are communicating to keep doing it.  Instead, focus on rewarding your dog with treats when you say no and they stop growling. Rewarding your dog for behavior you do like helps things go more smoothly. If you don’t like a behavior don’t reward them and don’t give them affection.

Puppies grow into adult dogs that need a relatively large amount of space. Take into consideration the amount of room you have while you’re looking for a dog. The puppy’s paws are one of the best things to look at when considering one. If a puppy has large paws it will more than likely turn into a large adult. If that is the case and you don’t have a lot of space, a large dog may not be suitable for you.

If you decide to get your puppy from an individual, be sure to ask for references and visit their facility. Talking to people who have gotten dogs from prior litters can be a great help. Some breeders produce large quantities of puppies and do not take into consideration their genetics, health or environment. This will give you an idea of what problems you may have to deal with later on.

Some types of dogs are very active compared to other dogs which need more exercise and space. Providing enough space will ensure that you can meet their daily exercise needs and can fit with their lifestyle. People who like to walk a lot or run daily with their dogs normally pick dogs who do well with this.  Some dogs can’t handle strenuous activities for a long period of time and they usually do not handle hot or humid weather.  The best option if you plan on doing a lot of things with your dog would be to get an active dog.

Now if you are working a lot of hours and don’t have a lot of time to spend with them, a dog may not fit into your lifestyle.  If you must have a dog just for companionship, you could consider a small dog.  Small ones can get the amount of exercise they need in a small amount of space.  When it comes to deciding on an adult dog or a puppy think about how much time you will have to spend with training them.  A puppy will need time to potty train and you will have to deal with chewing too.  They take a lot more time and attention along with more veterinary care the an adult.  With a puppy you have the ability to train him how you want without the worry of what method the person before used.

However, adults are much more calmer, they are already house trained and know the basic commands. This can be a very rewarding experience for you. If you are thinking of an adult dog, spend some extra time with the dog before you decide.  If you have children bring them with you, this will help ensure that they don’t mind children.

The breed or if they are mixed has a lot to do with their temperament. This is their personality. If you have children you should have a friendly dog. If you want a guard dog, will they learn a lot of commands easily or are they stubborn? Certain types of dogs have unique personalities that make them more suitable for certain people and can be totally unsuitable for others. If you take the time to research the type of dog you are interested in you can get a good understanding of their basic character.

So, does an active dog or does the calm one fit your lifestyle and personality?

Do you want one that needs a lot of attention or do you need one that is content with being alone.

Picking the right dog for you can take a some effort but it be worth it in the long run.
